“It bypasses easy sentimentality to show what adoption looks like when twenty-two families shoulder it together.”

Best for:
Families with kids 10+, church small groups, anyone who loves true stories.
Skip it if:
You want a light comedy for movie night. The trauma themes are real and sometimes intense.

What is it about?

In the late 1990s, in the piney woods of East Texas, Bishop W.C. Martin and his wife Donna led the small congregation of Bennett Chapel in Possum Trot. Older foster children and sibling groups were being left in state care for years. Donna became convinced that praying about it was not enough.

Over the next few years, twenty-two families in that modest church adopted seventy-seven of the hardest-to-place children in the state. Many had lived through neglect, abuse and one placement after another. The film follows what that decision did to living rooms, marriages and church pews.

Why it's worth your 2 hours

Faith films are often criticized for squeezing real suffering into a tidy ninety minutes resolved by one tearful prayer. Sound of Hope doesn't do that. It stays with the messy early weeks of trauma, when children lash out, break things and push love away to protect themselves.

Nika King is the reason to watch. Her Donna gets tired, loses her temper and runs into her own limits, and that makes her faith believable. Demetrius Grosse gives the Bishop a steady, protective warmth, and the film is as much about their marriage under pressure as about the children.

Growing up in a big Yoruba family, I knew the idea that a child belongs to the whole village. Watching an African American church in Possum Trot live it out brought me to tears.
